How mbira cycles create counterpoint

A pattern is simultaneously hand movement, interlocking texture, emergent melody, and tuning-specific sound. Software has to choose what it preserves.

A constrained evolution algorithm for mbira patterns

Evolve playback does not generate notes. It walks reversible whole-phrase paths inside a project-reviewed source hull and records why every transition was admitted.

Who, how, and limits

Editorial method

Who

MBIRA Research is the project’s editorial desk. It explains source and implementation decisions without claiming performer, teacher, lineage, or cultural authority.

How

We compare primary scholarship, source transcriptions, checked manifests, and executable tests. Every material source is linked, and engineering inference is labeled as inference.

Limits

Static transcriptions can bound software behavior, but they do not show how a musician would vary a part in performance. The model separates tested invariants from performance claims.

This publication is a technical and music-theory synthesis, not mbira instruction or performer review. Learn repertoire and practice from experienced Zimbabwean musicians and teachers.
